Riverfront Canine Club is this Sunday

This Sunday is our next Riverfront Canine Club!

The Riverfront Canine Club is a group dog walk that goes from Rivard Plaza up the Dequindre Cut and back again.  It is a super fun way to get your dog some winter exercise and to meet other nice people and their dogs.

Canine To Five is proud to sponsor the Canine Club in partnership with the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy as a way to bring together Detroit-loving dog owners and to show off the awesome developing riverfront park system.

It looks like it’s going to be a sunny clear day — perfect weather for a winter walk — so we hope you can join us!  We meet at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Rivard Plaza and the walk lasts about an hour and a half.

Winter Paw Care for Dogs

As the cold weather arrives, we want to remind everyone about the special needs of your dog’s paws in winter.

It’s important to keep the hair trimmed around your dog’s paw pads.  When this hair is too long water or snow can collect there and form ice balls in between his toes, which can drive your dog crazy!  Long hair around the foot can also reduce traction on slippery surfaces, making it easier for your dog to slip and hurt himself.

Keeping nails trimmed is important too. Nails that are too long reduce traction and they force the dog to walk on the backs of his feet, splaying his toes. The greater the space between his toes, the more snow will pack up between them.

Our groomers can keep your dog’s feet in great shape, or you can do it yourself at home.  Remember to be very careful not to cut the pads or other delicate parts of the foot.

While we’re on the topic, it is also important to dry and clean your dog’s paws when he comes in from outside.  This helps prevent tiny cuts and cracked pads.  A little petroleum jelly may soften the pads and prevent further cracking.

Keep these things in mind and your dog will have a happy, healthy winter!

Keep Active in Winter!

Kimo Frederickson is the owner of True Body Fitness, a fitness studio located in  Corktown that promotes the idea “Fitness without the attitude.” They offer one-to-one personal training, nutrition training and all kinds of group fitness classes to promote good health and wellness.  He wrote us recently to remind us how important it is for dogs to stay active in the winter

The bitter cold is ahead and it is time to hibernate!  Let’s get our fireplaces roaring, hot cocoa boiling and a furry friend or two to cuddle up with.  The only issue with this scenario: winter sometimes lasts all the way to April and laying low that long can easily wreak havoc on our bodies.  The same holds true for our little canine friends.

Are you conscious of how much less active you are in the winter? The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity every day to maintain a healthy heart.  Daily exercise is a great stress reducer and a powerful tool to lose or maintain your weight. In the cold months when you’re trapped indoors, make it a habit to pop on a workout video, take a group fitness class, or simply walk up and down your stairs.  Maybe even sign up with a fitness professional to keep you engaged.  The point is to just keep moving!

Your dog is in equal need of movement to live a healthy life. What do you do to keep your animal fit?  Surrounding them with the friendly dogs at Canine To Five is the equivalent of putting them in their own fitness class, supervised by their own personal trainer.  Drop your dog off at doggie daycare while you go work out so you both get some activity!

Spring is a time we should be strutting our stuff in the sunlight that we missed so much!  Let’s do that with a strong body and mind that we maintained all winter, and let your dog walk that cat-walk with you!

K-9

We love our friends in the Detroit Police Force and Fire Department.  We offer 20% off of daycare and cage free boarding to Detroit cops and firefighters as a way to say “thank you” for everything they do.

We also love it when cops come in to say hello and hold puppies to relieve stress!

It’s Holiday Boarding Season!

Our holiday boarding always fills up, so we really want to encourage you to get your boarding reservation in early this year.

Remember, at Canine To Five all dogs in cage-free boarding always sleep in a bed with a person each night. We want them to feel as at-home and comfortable as possible, and to make sure they have a Happy Holiday too!

Canine To Five: Behind the Scenes

The most important thing you can do at your dog daycare or kennel is to keep it clean. For so many reasons.  Did you know each month the Canine To Five Team deep cleans the building from top to bottom.

Check out the good times we had last night.  And when you come to the 3rd Annual Howl-Ween party on Sunday, be sure to check out how clean the kennels are!

Vaccination Reminders

One of the most critical things for the health of your pet is staying current on vaccinations, and that goes double for dogs that spend a lot of time around other dogs.

At Canine To Five we require all dogs to be current on their vaccinations for Rabies, DHLPP and Bordetella.  We ask for proof of vaccination from your vet before a dog can be admitted to daycare, and when your vaccinations expire we will give you a reminder to make sure they are renewed.

Vaccinations prevent some pretty nasty stuff.  Rabies needs no explanation, and that vaccination is done annually or every three years, depending on the vaccine.  DHLPP stands for Distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus and Canine Parainfluenza (you can read more information about those diseases here) and that vaccine is administered annually.  And the Bordetella vaccine, which helps protect against Canine Cough, is administered at least annually, although we require it every six months at Canine To Five (and we can even administer that vaccination here).

Not all dog daycares stay on top of vaccinations like we do, but it’s really important not just for your dog but for all the dogs in daycare.  If we pester you a little bit about this don’t feel bad – it’s just because we care!

Meet the Staff

We have an awesome group of people working here at Canine To Five, as you’ve probably noticed when you’ve been here.  They have YEARS of experience working with animals, which means your dog is always in good hands.

We all love working with dogs, but there is a lot more to the staff than just their work at the daycare.  Check out our updated Staff page on the Canine To Five website and get to know the people who spend all day with your dog a little better!
